![Kamakhya Temple is located atop Nilanchal Hill in the western portion of Guwahati, Assam. The deity of the temple, Kamakhya Devi, is known as the 'Bleeding Goddess'. The temple celebrates the'shakti' that exists within each woman.
It is thought to be one of the 51 Shakti Pithas, where the body parts of the goddess Sati fell during Lord Shiva's Tandava (cosmic dance) following her self-immolation.
The temple's distinguishing characteristic is the absence of an idol; instead, it holds a yoni-like structure that represents the goddess' reproductive organ. This facet represents the goddess' creative and procreative powers. The temple draws believers and pilgrims from all across India, particularly during the annual Ambubachi Mela, which commemorates the goddess' menstrual cycle and fertility.
